What Information Do I Need to Provide to Get an Accurate Custom Packaging Quotation?

Getting an accurate, transparent packaging quotation from a Chinese manufacturer is often the first real test of how professional a supplier is. Many buyers receive vague, wide-ranging estimates — sometimes lowballed to start a conversation, sometimes inflated because the factory is hedging against unknown costs — simply because the initial inquiry lacked critical specifications. This forces buyers into a slow, frustrating back-and-forth that can delay a project by weeks.

At Packshion, we believe a quotation should be precise the first time. To provide you with a detailed, itemized, and honest price, we need you to share the following key information. The more complete your inquiry, the faster and more accurate your quote will be.

1. Box Type

The structural style of your packaging is the foundation of the quotation. Different box types involve radically different production processes, material consumption, and labor costs. Please specify the type of box you need, such as:

  • Magnetic gift box (rigid box with hidden magnet closure)

  • Cosmetic rigid box (two-piece or hinged lid with premium finishing)

  • Jewelry cylinder box (round tube with foam insert)

  • Folding carton (standard tuck-end or crash-lock bottom)

  • Corrugated mailer box (for e-commerce shipping)

If you are unsure of the exact box type, describe the product you need to package — for example, "a luxury box for a 50ml serum bottle" — and our specialists will recommend the most suitable structure.

2. Exact Dimensions (Length × Width × Height)

Provide the precise internal or external dimensions in millimeters or centimeters. If you already have a dieline file or a sample of an existing box, even better. Accurate dimensions are critical because they directly determine material usage, die-cutting mold size, and shipping volume. If you only have approximate dimensions, we can still quote, but the price may be subject to adjustment once final dimensions are confirmed.

3. Order Quantity

Your target order quantity has a significant impact on unit price. We need to know the total number of boxes you plan to order. Our MOQ is generally 500 units for custom boxes, and we offer tiered pricing — the larger the quantity, the lower the unit cost. If you are still testing the market, we can also discuss small-batch options (starting from 300 units for some box types). For accurate pricing, please provide your expected quantity range (e.g., 1,000–2,000 units).

4. Paper Material

The substrate you choose affects both cost and brand perception. Common options include:

  • Kraft paper (natural, eco-friendly look; FSC recycled available)

  • FSC certified recycled paper (for sustainable brands)

  • Art paper / coated paper (smooth, high-quality print surface)

  • White cardboard (SBS, rigid and premium)

  • Black cardboard (through-dyed, luxury feel)

  • Specialty paper (textured, metallic, colored)

If you are not sure which material fits your product and budget, we can recommend the most cost-effective option based on your industry (e.g., cosmetics, food, electronics, apparel).

5. Surface Finishing

Finishing techniques define the tactile and visual experience of your packaging. Specify which finishes you need, such as:

  • Matte lamination (soft, non-reflective)

  • Gloss lamination (shiny, protective)

  • Spot UV (high-gloss contrast on selected areas)

  • Gold / silver foil stamping (metallic logo or pattern)

  • Embossing / debossing (raised or recessed texture)

  • Soft-touch coating (velvety feel)

These finishes are priced differently. If you want multiple finishes combined (e.g., matte lamination + gold foil + spot UV), list them all so we can calculate the exact additive cost.

6. Inner Insert or Divider (If Needed)

If your box requires an interior structure to hold a product securely — such as a sponge insert, velvet-lined tray, or cardboard divider — please specify the type and layout. Inner inserts are common for cosmetics, jewelry, electronics, and gift sets. You can send a sketch or describe the product shape, and we will design the insert accordingly.

7. Shipping Terms

To provide a complete quotation, we need to know your preferred delivery arrangement. Common options:

  • FOB (Free On Board) — we handle all costs up to loading at the port; you arrange and pay for ocean/air freight and insurance.

  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) — we include freight and basic insurance to your destination port.

  • DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) — we handle everything up to your door, including import duties and taxes.

The choice of shipping terms affects the total cost. If you already have a freight forwarder, let us know so we can quote FOB. Otherwise, we can provide an estimated CIF or DDP price for your reference.

8. Reference Pictures or Dieline Files (Highly Recommended)

If you have reference images of similar packaging, an existing sample, or a dieline file (AI, PDF, or CDR), please share them. This dramatically reduces back-and-forth communication and helps us understand your exact vision. Even a rough sketch or a competitor's product photo can clarify design intent and save time.

What You Can Expect from Packshion

Once you provide the above information, our team will analyze your specs and send you a detailed, itemized quotation within 12 working hours (same business day for most inquiries). The quotation will clearly break down:

  • Unit price based on your quantity

  • Tooling costs (mold/die fees, if any, one-time)

  • Sample fees (if applicable, with refund policy)

  • Estimated shipping cost (for CIF/DDP quotes)

  • Production lead time

  • Payment terms

Zero Hidden Fees. The price we quote is the price you pay. No surprises, no last-minute add-ons.

If you are unsure about materials, finishes, or structure, simply tell us your product type and brand positioning. Our packaging specialists will recommend a cost-effective solution tailored to your industry and budget. That way, you get an accurate quote and an optimized packaging design from the very start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I don't know the exact dimensions yet?
A: You can provide approximate dimensions and note "to be confirmed." We will quote based on your estimate and adjust the final price once the dimensions are finalized. Alternatively, we can help you determine the correct size from your product dimensions.

Q: Do you charge for the quotation?
A: No. Our quotation service is completely free and without obligation. We aim to respond within 12 hours.

Q: Can you quote without a reference picture?
A: Yes. As long as you provide the box type, dimensions, quantity, and material preferences, we can prepare an accurate quote. Reference pictures simply make the process faster and reduce the chance of miscommunication.

Q: Will the quotation include all finishing costs?
A: Yes. If you specify the finishing techniques (e.g., gold foil, spot UV, embossing), those costs are included as separate line items in the quotation. No finishing cost is hidden.
